Let Obama's words be remembered now, "We are united as one U.S. īiden's family also has always had a good word for the troops. In my visits to their bed sides and rehab centers, I have been in awe watching a wounded warrior grab his walker and pull himself up and through excruciating pain, take a step and then another". As you know well with service comes great sacrifice, and after 15 years of war, our wounded warriors bear the scars, both seen and unseen. That’s the difference you make - you continue to make, in the lives of people around the world. One woman in West Africa said, we thanked God first and then we thanked America second for caring about us. It was you that set up the architecture and set the example for the world’s response. Think of Ebola and the countless lives this armed forces saved in West Africa. The help you delivered in times of crisis from an earthquake in Haiti to the tsunami in Japan. And in the first few weeks of my job when Somali pirates took Captain Phillips, later on when they kidnapped Jessica Buchanan, it was you that went in and you that risked everything, and you that brought these Americans home. "Because of you, the world has seen the awesome reach of American armed forces. As President Obama said in his farewell speech, in part: Ignoring or suppressing them (including denying them access to public fora like Twitter and Facebook) won't make the problem go away.Īlthough we are worried about some people in the military, let us not forget how much we appreciate them. Our current tormenters may miss their mark by a lot, and those who break the law in their enthusiasm must answer for it much as some civil rights activists did half a century ago. But in some respects their behavior is similar to that, nearly 250 years ago, of those who signed and sent King George III the Declaration of Independence, citing numerous violations of their rights as English citizens, and followed it up with violent action. Like most of us, they also believe many untrue things, sometimes to the point of absurdity, and that may lead them to wrong conclusions and actions. On the evidence it appears that many members of these groups care intensely about the constitution and laws. That may, indeed, have impelled them to enlist in the first place, and may have carried them through basic and advanced training or several reenlistments. It seems to be largely unnoticed or underreported that members of the Oath Keepers, Three Percenters, and similar groups seem genuine believers in their duty to protect and defend the constitution. Military personnel, both current and former, represent most of the spectrum of belief and opinion in the population at large. Previous administrations ignored it, Obama indirectly fueled their rage because of his skin color, and Trump encouraged them. It's a huge Trojan horse that's been decades in the making, as though Biden doesn't have enough on his plate. Clearly many don't care about that protect and serve thingy, or the Constitution. And then there's the problem with police departments in all fifty states. How to prevent them from stockpiling arms and ammo- I have no clue. Might as well mention the Secret Service too.Īny that express anti-democratic leanings with a preference for Nazis (a bitter enemy of this country, how many died to defeat them, how much treasure and effort was expended, how many came back wounded +/- PTSD?), fascism, white supremacy/nationalism. National Guard, Reserves, actual active duty in the Army Navy Air Force Marines Coast Guard. It's the unknowable numbers that weren't there captured on film who are in the military. The worry isn't the folks who were at the riots at the seat of our democracy January 6th.
